For nearly 150 years Arya Samaj has stood for one simple idea: a person is great by deeds and character, not by caste of birth. Intercaste marriage – Antarjatiya Vivah – is one of the most practical ways of putting that idea into life.
Why Arya Samaj Opposes Caste by Birth
In Satyarth Prakash, Swami Dayanand explained that the Vedic varna system is based on guna, karma and svabhava – qualities, work and nature – and that Vedic knowledge is open to all human beings. Untouchability and birth-based hierarchy have no support in the Vedas. This is the root of the Samaj’s campaign.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is intercaste marriage legal in India?
Yes. Indian law does not prohibit marriage between persons of different castes. The Hindu Marriage Validity Act 1949 removed caste barriers for Hindu marriages, the Hindu Marriage Act 1955 requires only that the parties are eligible adults, and the Supreme Court has affirmed that adult couples may marry across caste (Lata Singh v. State of U.P., 2006).
Did Swami Dayanand support intercaste marriage?
Swami Dayanand taught that varna is determined by one's qualities, actions and nature (guna-karma-svabhava), not by birth, and he rejected birth-based caste hierarchy and untouchability. Arya Samaj therefore encourages marriages based on character, education and compatibility.
What is the Arya Marriage Validation Act, 1937?
Act No. 19 of 1937 provides that a marriage between two Arya Samajists is not invalid merely because the parties belong to different castes or sub-castes, or one of them earlier belonged to another religion or community.
Is an Arya Samaj marriage certificate enough proof of marriage?
Courts have observed that the Samaj's certificate alone does not establish a marriage; validity depends on the rites required by Section 7 of the Hindu Marriage Act (such as havan and saptapadi) actually being performed. Couples should also register the marriage with the government Marriage Registrar and keep photographs and witness details.
Who is eligible for a Vedic marriage at Arya Samaj Fatehpur?
Both partners must be adults (groom 21+, bride 18+), mentally sound, free to marry (unmarried, divorced or widowed), not within prohibited degrees of relationship, and marrying of their own free consent. Please contact the Samaj for the current document list.
